5th Annual Fiesta-5-de-Mayo
The 5th annual fund raising event from the Larry D. Large foundation, fiesta 5 de mayo, was held at Las Gaviotas on May 5th. We arrived to the party eager to see the items for sale on the silent auction and we were looking forward to meeting up with good friends. The party started with music from Akusticos, while people were heading to the auction tables, saying “Hi”, to old friends and new friends and ordering cocktails to start the evening. The many volunteers for the event helped make it a success. Actor Michael Starr, best known for his appearances in good fellows and Dumb and Dumber, was present to help Tab Gray emcee the event.
There were about 275 attendees. All had a great time watching and listening to the color guard and band from the Instituto Tecnologico superior de Puerto Peñasco, who they sang the Mexican anthem and gave their respects to the Mexican flag. Traditionally children’s performance from the student from the students of CIMA were led by Tatiana Martinez. The kids were adorable in their Mexican outfits, and did a great job performing for the crowd. After the students performed, we then had the acknowledgements in which we learned all the good work that the foundation has done for the people of Rocky Point. The work includes scholarship programs through which young people are given the opportunity to further their education with the support of the foundation, book donations, the completion of a park with handicapped accessibility.
The foundation also helps build bathrooms for elderly people that only have the most rudimentary services, giving them more dignity as each bathroom has a shower, toilet, and sink plus a water pump and septic system.
The party continued with a great buffet made possible by Hacienda las Fuentes and chef Mikey medina. A great selection of Mexican specialties were served. A beautifully decorated watermelon, as a reminder of the beautiful colors of the Mexican flag, was the serving dish for a great fruit salad, and last in the buffet line was the carrot cake. Deserts were served by Churros and Burros.
